Kenilworth
(08/22)
Having gotten our P plates after our Mingo Crossing trip, we headed off to Kenilworth for a few nights in our Jayco Lark. We stayed at the showgrounds - first time staying at a showgrounds site.
It took a bit longer to be fully set up only because of a bit of a problem with a dodgy leg (no, not mine - one of the levelling thingys). Yes, that is a technical term. Eventually we got everything working, as well as the bed flys. I think we've nailed the bed-flys with the use of a couple of 'occy straps'. It did rain of course and nothing got wet! ⛈
Because we had power we took the TV because I really didn't want to miss out on the grand final of 'Beauty and the Geek'. There was a fair bit of drama getting reception and I was sure it was going to end in tears (not mine!) so I took a walk. To my great surprise, when I got back we had TV. Sadly that meant we didn't get to play cards or Scrabble. We did get to see Beauty and the Geek though (and some football).
You can have a fire at the show-grounds and the care-takers can provide fire-wood for a fee and they deliver it to your site for $15.
The facilities at the showgrounds are OK. You will need to remember to take $1 coins for the showers - it is $1 for 4 minutes. Surprisingly, 4 minutes is quite a while in the shower. (It's not that it is a luxury shower cubicle where you want to spend hours luxuriating but it is certainly adequate)
The Wednesday and Thursday nights were really quiet at the showgrounds but it picked up on the Friday and Saturday nights. People everywhere! It also got a bit cooler over the week-end with a bit of rain (of course - there will always be rain if we are camping) We tested the reverse cycle air-conditioning and I must say it worked great - lovely and warm.
We debated before we left if we should take the Porta-Loo and, in the end, decided not to. Big Mistake! We were quite a way from the amenities which made doing a loo dash really late at night or early in the morning a bit of a pain. Lesson learned - take the Porta-Loo. It's not that it weighs that much! 🚽
It is so picturesque around Kenilworth with plenty of nature walks which we did. The lady in the information centre was really helpful and gave us a map of all the walks in the area.
Food
We couldn't go to Kenilworth without checking out the bakery - home of the 1kg donut. No, I didn't have one but I did try the coffee in a donut. A bit messy and rich with all the chocolate coating the donut, but good all the same. We also tried the Big Boss Chocolate Co where they stock all local products. The white choclate-coated freeze-dried strawberries and rasberries were amazing. We had a beautiful pizza from the Kenilworth Pizza. I can also vouch for the ice-cream at Kenilworth Dairies.
In case you think I didn't cook at all during our stay I did actually use the Dream Pot and cooked corn-meat and vegetables and also whipped up a red chicken curry. I was fairly impressed with both. Perhaps I will become the domestic goddess of camping! (or not).
Drives
We also took a drive to Maleny to wander around the shops. So many little cafes with a focus on organic produce and quirky shops to look at. Certainly worth a visit if you are in the area.
Imbil and Lake Borumba are also really close to Kenilworth so we took a drive there as well. Some nice camping spots at Borumba Dam for another time. I discovered a really nice little shop at Imbil - Country Ayr Collectables. Some great antiques, clothes and shoes!
Where to next? Somewhere on the beach for fishing 🐟🐠🎣 we think. I may need to brush up on my fish-cooking skills.
